Buckthorn Roundup – October 15th, MB Johnson Park

October 15 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Join us on October 15 at MB Johnson Park in Moorhead for a Buckthorn Management Event!

MB Johnson Park is one of the largest city parks in the Red River Valley. In addition to its wide open recreational areas, the park features miles of scenic trails along the Red River and adjacent Snakey Creek. Unfortunately, it has also become home to the invasive shrub known as Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica).

The City of Moorhead Forestry Department is teaming up with volunteers to remove this aggressive plant. This ongoing effort will take time and a lot of help, but with persistence, we can reduce buckthorn’s chokehold on the riparian forests of the Red River Valley.

We’ll be meeting near the playground at MB Johnson at 4:00 PM. Please wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes, as well as a good pair of gloves to shield yourself from the plant’s thorns.

Mid-October is an ideal time to tackle buckthorn, as it is one of the last plants to drop its leaves. Its glossy, oval, dark green leaves stand out when most other plants have already changed color or shed their leaves, making buckthorn easier to spot. Once you’ve seen it, you won’t forget it.

RSVP if you can join us for this important event!
