SUMMARY:Drum Flow Session - Jun 23 2026
DESCRIPTION:Dear drummers!\n\nAs we step into the summer and embrace the season change\, we are reminded of the beauty of community and togetherness\, of the beings within and around us and of all the beautiful and creative ways we can celebrate them all.  In that spirit\, we will have our drum flow session at the MB Johnson Park on Tuesday\, June 23rd. This will be a rather special drum session as it will be part of the 2nd annual FM Flutter Fest. This family friendly event is a celebration of community support for pollinators and healthy ecosystems.\n\nLeading into the drumming\, we will participate in an activity called\, “The Council of All Beings”. Think of the animals\, the plants\, the trees and the waters all around us as the beings. This activity is a playful invitation to imagine what nature might say if she had a human voice to speak. Be sure to stop by our table before the drumming to select a being and create a mask to represent them. We will bring these voices into the circle and move our way from the voices of beings into the rhythm of drumming. Together\, we will shake the ground underneath us with the sounds of our instruments and be their voices\, to joyfully honor and represent them.\n\nInstruments will be provided\, but if you have your own\, you are more than welcome to bring it along. No experience required\, and participants of all ages are welcome.\n\nCome curious and ready to be the sound of music of our local beings.\n\nSee you at the circle!!\n

SUMMARY:Acorn Gather- MB Johnson Park
DESCRIPTION:We have been tending to a particular Bur Oak at MB Johnson over the past few years. We have removed buckthorn and protected germinating young saplings. This Tuesday we will be gathering at the park to collect acorns from this tree. Our hope is to use this acorns to spread the genetics of this elder oak who has sat beside the red for over 200 years. You can learn more about how you can help in this project here. Meet us at the playground parking area at 5:30.

SUMMARY:Fall Meet\, Greet & Deplete Buckthorn Event- MB Johnson Park
DESCRIPTION:Come gather with like-minded people at our Fall Buckthorn Event at MB Johnson Park. We’ll start by getting acquainted at the playground shelter. Just as this work asks us to connect to the land\, it also gives us the opportunity to connect with our community; to build these connections\, we’re hosting a speed friending activity. Following this activity\, we’ll take a short walk through the park and along the forest where our restoration work is underway. After putting in some time doing land stewardship\, we’ll return to the shelter for brunch\, more socializing\, and final thoughts. Everyone is encouraged to bring a brunch item to share. \nWhen & Where\n\nDate: Saturday Morning\, October 24\nLocation: MB Johnson Park — playground and indoor shelter\n\nWhat We’ll Be Doing\n\nRemoving large-berried buckthorn that has been cut down and treated by City of Moorhead Forestry\nProtecting bur oak saplings to support the next generation of forest growth\nPulling sapling bur oaks-roots and all!\n\nFall buckthorn with berries and long lasting green leaves.\nSchedule\n\n10:00–10:40 AM – Potluck and Speed Friending (a series of short\, rotating one-on-one chats for meeting new people.\n\n10:40 AM – Intro / the work / walking tour\n11:00 AM – Work\n12:30 PM – Brunch at the indoor shelter\n\nWhat to Bring & Wear\n\nBrunch items for sharing\nSturdy boots (buckthorn is thorny!)\nWeather-appropriate layers; long pants and sleeves recommended. Clothing that doesn’t catch on thorns is a bonus.\nWork gloves (leather is best)\, if you have them\, some will be provided by the city as well.\nWater bottle\n\nAbout Our Group\nOur group of volunteers has been collaborating with the City of Moorhead for several years in a collective effort to deplete the foothold of invasive buckthorn among the oak forests of our local parks. Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) is an aggressive shrub that spreads readily through forests\, along fencelines\, and into backyards. Its roots carry toxins that inhibit the germination of other plants\, its leaves emerge early and persist late into fall to monopolize light in the understory\, and its berries act as a laxative — forcing an early exit for the animals that eat them\, which optimizes the buckthorn’s chances of germinating over a period of up to six years. \nOur project focuses on organizing events at targeted areas in our local parks\, where we can deplete buckthorn while protecting the oldest bur oaks in the forest. Alongside buckthorn removal\, we’ve begun protecting bur oak saplings to help start a new generation of growth in the understory. We’ve also begun gathering acorns from these elder oaks to propagate and plant throughout the parks and across our region. \nThis work will take time\, helpful hands\, and an appreciation of restoration over time which weaves together community and the lands that sustain it. If you enjoy our parks\, collective work and land restoration\, this event is for you. \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nSubscribe to Future Restoration Events\n* indicates required\nEmail Address *\nFirst Name *\nLast Name *\nPhone Number
