Herbs have been used by nearly all cultures for the treatment of disease. The Chinese system of herbal medicine dates back over 3000 years, and the earliest texts describing the use of various plants, minerals and animals are over 2000 years old. Today the Chinese herbal pharmacy includes several thousand herbs, and is a fundamental aspect of traditional Chinese medicine.

Herbal prescriptions are balanced formulations of herbs usually composed of 5-15 different ingredients. They are designed to address the root imbalance of any condition while treating the symptoms that are resulting because of it. For example, herbs that can move the qi or energy and blood are often combined with herbs that reduce inflammation and ease pain in cases of trauma so that healing can begin while the discomfort is alleviated. This balancing of herbs is also designed to reduce any potential side effects.
